Your reader’s attention is like a floating character in a holiday parade. The handlers need multiple tethers to effectively steer the giant balloon for the duration of the event. In the same way, each time our words engage the senses, we embed an anchor in the reader’s subconscious, tethering them to our story world. The more senses we capture, the more firmly they are entrenched. Describe the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and feels of your world, remembering to show how these affect the characters, and not just tell about the effect.
